37 km from Agra. Built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar as his new

capital, after the prediction of a Muslim saint of Sikri that the

emperor would have a male heir came true. Built between 1570

and 1586, it was later abandoned probably because of lack of

water. The magnificent palace complex with its Diwan-i-Am and

Diwan-i-Khas is preserved as it was in Akbar's time. When

Elizabethan Englishmen came here in 1538 to meet Akbar they

found a city exceeding London in population & grandeur.
