AWESOME FOURSOME
Re-inventing the
Fantastic Four
franchise.
K
ate Mara steps into
the invisible
skin-tight suit of Sue
Storm, most recently worn by Jessica Alba.
Jamie Bell becomes Ben Grimm/The Thing,
most recently played by Michael Chiklis.
Whiplash
’s Miles Teller fantastically stretches
himself as Reed Richards, last played by Ioan
Gruffudd. And Michael B. Jordan follows in the
fiery footsteps of Chris Evans’s Johnny Storm/
Human Torch.
STACK's
Gill Pringle
met with
the fearless foursome at CinemaCon:
Q:
Tell us about the storyline?
Michael B. Jordan:
It’s an origin story. You
find these characters all in their own individual
lives. But fate brings us together, and you
see us grow, overcoming obstacles and
adversaries.
Q:
And the stunts?
Jamie Bell:
They put me on stilts, because my
character is much larger than I am. So I had to
walk on stilts which made me
six foot eight. It was intense,
trying to balance all the time.
MilesTeller:
I got nine
stitches in my finger for
something that wasn’t
really a stunt. I was searching
for a tool, and when I pulled
my hand out of the prop box, I took a chunk
out of my finger and needed stitches.
Kate Mara:
There’s some flying scenes,
so it took a while to learn how to feel
comfortable and look like you know what
you’re doing when you’re hanging from a wire.
Q:
Michael, how often did you work
on the phrase “Flame on”?
Jordan:
Aw, man. Not often. Johnny never
really practiced it because he didn’t know
he was gonna get powers. I wanted to
make it as grounded as I could, so not
as many times as people would think.
Teller:
People will be yelling that at you for
the rest of your life. “Michael B., flame on!”

MAGIC MIKE THE
TV SERIES?
S
teven Soderbergh famously
said he was quitting the
movies. It looks like he could
become a force on TV.
Following a path forged by
producer Jerry Bruckheimer
with the
CSI
franchise, many
major motion picture figures
have turned their energies to the small screen,
including Sam Raimi (
Xena, Ash vs. Evil Dead
),
Michael Bay (
Black Sails
), Ridley Scott (
The Good
Wife
) and Guillermo del Toro (
The Strain
).
It looks like Soderbergh is the next cab – or
is that cat? – of the rank. He's already received
widespread acclaim as one of the showrunners
on the first season of
The Knick,
which stars Clive
Owen as a flawed but brilliant doctor operating
in a fictional New York hospital in 1900. Medical
procedures are primitive by today's standards
and the series doesn't shy away from the bloody
craft of the surgeon, though it also offers up a
great ensemble cast and themes of life and
death at the pointy end of a hospital, which has
seen
The Knick
compared to
St. Elsewhere
.
Clive Owen received a Golden Globe
nomination for Best Actor for
The Knick
and the series has already been renewed
for a second season.
Next up for Soderbergh is a TV production
of
The Girlfriend Experience
, based on his 2009
movie of the same name which starred porn star
Sasha Grey. The serialisation will take shape
as a 13-part anthology chronicling the complex
relationship that occurs between exclusive
escorts and their high net worth clients.
It would be easy to make a leap of logic and
imagine that
Magic Mike
would be another
raunchy Soderbergh movie up for this kind of
treatment. Magic
Mike XXL
has already proved
a hit with female audiences and there are plenty
of threads and characters to explore. Channing
Tatum and Joe Manganiello may be too busy but
there are plenty of fresh-faced hunks that would
easily step into the breach.
Perhaps it's time to get an internet campaign
going?
The Knick - Season 1
will be out on
DVD and Blu-ray August 19.
DINOSAURS DEVOUR SUPERHEROES
I
t's official,
Jurassic World
has surpassed
The Avengers
to become the third highest
grossing movie of all time. Taking in more than
$US1.52 billion internationally has pushed it past
Marvel's 2012 supehero big bash. There's still
a long way to go before the dino rampage sinks
Titanic
, with its box office gross of $2.18 billion.
On top of the heap is
Avatar
at $2.79 billion.
With James Cameron working on a sequel for
2017, and with the impending release of
Star
Wars: The Force Awakens
in 2015, there are a
couple of contenders to challenge these record
holders. Sitting a smidgen behind
The Avengers
is another 2015 smash in
Fast & Furious 7
,
which is set to hit JB Hi-Fi on DVD and Bu-ray
on August 27, while
Jurassic World
will come
roaring into stores on October 15.
