in 194/, is perhaps the best known to Irish practitioners.
The third edition under the editorship ol J. Burke and
P. Allsopp, appeared from 1951 to 1953, with supple-
ments in 1956 and 1965. It seems to this reviewer that
the learned editor of the fourth edition could have
wisely decided to dispense citing any old case contained
in say the second edition before 1900. Save for some
brilliant exceptions, this reviewer does not consider that
the nineteenth-century judges were necessarily the acme
of legal knowledge as regards prevailing modern condi-
tions. There are many more gems of legal learning to
be culled from the Commonwealth, and it seems a pity
that the learned editor should consider that all wisdom
and learning is necessarily contained in the person of
an English judge. However, the list of meanings given
to the word "any" as well as the list of what is and
what is not a "charitable purpose" is most impressive.
It wou'd seem that under the heading "Words and
Phrases" in the various Digests of Irish Law Reports,
our learned author could have selected some very useful
legal definitions; let us hope this will be done in subse-
quent volumes, if this edition of Stroud is to appeal to
the modern Irish lawyer; examples would be

Issue of New Land Certificates
An application has been received from the registered owner
mentioned in the Schedule hereto for the issue of a land
certificate in substitution for the original land certificate issued
in respect of the lands specified in the Schedule which original
land certificate is stated to have been lost or inadvertently
destroyed.
A new certificate will be issued unless notification is received
in the Registry within twenty-eight days from the date of
publication of this notice that the original certificate is in
existence and in the custody of some person other than the
registered owner. Any such notification should state the
grounds on which the certificate is being held.

OBITUARY
Mr. Dermod M. F. Walsh, Law Agent, Dublin Cor-
poration, who was admitted as a solicitor in Trinity
Term, 1933, died suddenly in Sir Patrick Dun's Hos-
pital, Dublin, on 30th October 1971.
Mrs. Mary Frances O'Connor, only daughter of the
late Maurice Healy (solicitor, Cork), who was admitted
as a solicitor in Trinity Term, 1937, died suddenly in
Cork on 28th October 1971.
Mr. Michael C. O'Driscoll died on 13th October 1971
at his residence, Droum Cross, Douglas Road, Cork.
Mr. O'Driscoll was admitted in Michaelmas Term,
1951, and practised as a partner in the firm of Messrs
O'Flynn, O'Driscoll and Russell at 59 South Mall,
Cork.
