property as returned for duty, that the six years'
qualifying clause is inserted.
It is undoubtedly open to any party accountable
for duty to apply to have the value of the property
officially determined by the Valuation Commis
sioners. They do not appear to be under any statutory
obligation to comply with such a request, and in
fact they would probably be physically unable to
cope with the work if the value of all property
passing on death had to be officially determined for
the purpose of death duties.
The matter has now been raised again by the
Irish banks, following representations which have
been made by the English Law Society to the British
Inland Revenue authorities. The Council have
appointed a sub-committee to discuss the matter
with the representatives of the banks, and to take
the matter up again jointly with the banks' rep
resentatives in discussions with the Revenue Com
missioners.
SOLICITORS' GOLFING SOCIETY
THE Spring Meeting of the Society will be held at
Baltray, on Saturday, ist May, when numerous
prizes, including the Society's Cup, the Captain's
Prize, the Veteran's Cup and the St. Patrick's Plate
will be played for. Play will commence at n a.m.,
and members will please make their own arrange
ments as far as possible as regards travelling. If
members with seats available will communicate
with the Secretary he will endeavour to facilitate
members looking for seats.
Arrangements are being made for those members
who would like to do so, to spend the week-end
at Baltray, and they will be entitled to use the Course
on Sunday, 2nd May. Those wishing to stay the
week-end will please notify the Secretary as soon as
possible.
The Annual General Meeting of the Society will
be held in the Club House, Baltray, at 6.30 p.m.
on the day of the outing, when the usual business
will be transacted.
The Captain's Dinner will be held after the
meeting at 7.30. Full circular is being sent to the
members.

OBITUARY
MR. THOMAS H. R. CRAIG, Solicitor, died at his
residence, Waterville, Conyngham Road, Dublin;
on 29th March, 1948.
Mr. Craig was admitted in Hilary Sittings, 1892,
and practised at 30 South Frederick Street, Dublin,
up to the year 1945 when he retired. He was a
member of the Council from 1928 to 1939, and
was Vice-President for the year 1931-32.
MR. HENRY F. CHIDLEY, Solicitor, died in Dublin,
on 3oth.March, 1948.
Mr. Chidley was admitted in Hilary Sittings, 1891,
and practised at n Sth. Frederick Street, Dublin.
MR. FRANCIS E. STEPHENS, Solicitor, died at his
residence, Cremorne, Sydney Parade Avenue, Dublin,
on 30th March, 1948.
Mr. Stephens served his apprenticeship with the
late Mr. Henry F. Stephens, Dublin, was admitted
in Hilary Sittings, 1910, and practised at 52 Dame
Street, Dublin, until the year 1916, and at 43 Dawson
Street, Dublin, in the year 1917 when he ceased to
practise.
