Power cables
Cable rotating machines for up to
extra-high voltage
Precise manufacturing techniques are essential to ensure the reliability of high voltage power cable and Pourtier, of the Gauder
Group, has developed a variety of equipment for different stages of the process. The Pourtier rigid strander line for segmental core is
designed with tension control on each wire, automatic correction between full bobbin and empty bobbin and adjustment from the
control desk during operation.
Sophisticated rotating heads provide
the necessary compacting, shaping and
pre-spiralling of the conductor, while
the special design of the compacting
and shaping rollers meets the strict
requirement of high voltage power
cables. The line includes all possible
means to secure complete water tight-
ness of the segment. A side-loading
system allows bobbin preparation
during operation, which reduces down
time and increases productivity.
Pourtier’s drum twister integrates
all the necessary parameters for the
stringent production requirements of
high voltage power cable, including a
smooth deviation angle for segments
as well as for the laid-up conductor
(resulting in a longer take-up frame).
Consistent tension on each segment is
of the utmost importance for laying-up
of Milliken cable to ensure a perfect
geometry of the finished conductor.
A special correction system is also used to automatically adjust the relative position of each segment before entering the laying-up
block. Before entering into the stranding block, several tapes are longitudinally applied between the segments. When laid-up, the
segments are taped together with semi-conductive tapes and the cable made watertight.

Reels for power cables

and wire industry. In the last few years the company has increased its capacity for the production of drums and reels for cables, rope
and strands. In particular, the company has focused its investments on the development of reels for power cables, and new solutions
for the manufacturing and shipping of large reels.
The design of new reel types and the evaluation of the best solutions to
meet customers’ requirements have been supported by the implementation
of 3D software and FEA simulations. Those tools are also suitable to evaluate
reel capacity, and prevent possible ruptures in the event of heavy-duty
applications.
The Appiani range of products includes structural reel type BCS and
corrugated BFA type or fin flanged reels. The BFA reel is also offered with a
smooth internal flange and drum surface that is suitable for medium and
high voltage cable.
Special surface treatments are available, such as hot-galvanizing according to
UNI EN ISO 1461, to suit power cable applications in tropical and humid
high-temperature environments. Reels are also available in inox for umbilical
and oil/marine applications.
