GHS stands for „Globally Harmonious System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals““ and is an ordinance of the European Union (EU). It is a

globally uniform system for classifying chemicals and identifying them on packaging and on safety data sheets.

The GHS system has replaced the previous classification and identification system of the EU. It is regulated through the CLP Ordinance (Classification,

Labelling and Packaging). It has had to be bindingly applied to materials since 1 December 2012. The second step of GHS implementation now affects

compounds and thus all chemical and technical products. For this, GHS/CLP labelling will be legally mandatory from 1 June 2015.

This directive is primarily to protect users. Through the expanded texts of hazards and symbols, users of products should be able to better identify and

assess products that are a risk to health and the environment.
