No. 984 is an electrically heated, 500ºF
(260ºC) custom-designed top-loading
oven from Grieve, currently used for
curing connector assemblies onto long
cables at the customer’s facility.
Workspace dimensions measure 72"
W x 8" D x 14" H. 12kW are installed
in Nichrome wire elements to heat
the unit, while a 600 CFM, ½ HP
recirculating blower motor provides
rear-to-front
airflow
across
the
workload.
This top-loading oven features 4"
thick insulated walls, aluminised steel
exterior, type 430 stainless steel interior,
four independently hinged doors to
expose the front and back of each
loading station, steel plate oven floor
and a workspace floor reinforced for
100lb loading on ¼" plate.
Controls on the No. 984 include four
special automatic door switches to shut
off blower and heat when any door is
opened, plus a digital programming
temperature controller, manual reset
excess temperature controller with
separate contactors and recirculating
blower airflow safety switch.

Excellent conductivity through the
use of diamond coated dies enable cable
makers to cut costs.
Bunching, stranding and compacting
dies are often used to form multi-wire
electrical cables. A bunching or stranding
die groups single and multiple wires
together, whereas a compacting die
compacts the multi-wire strand to the
required form factor.
State-of-the-art
diamond
coating
technology and tight diameter tolerances
from Esteves diamond coated dies give
the cable company the ability to save
material and manufacturing costs.
The
reasonably
thick
ultra-smooth
chemical vapour deposited layer of
diamond on a tungsten carbide die
ensures the smoothest wire and cable
surface. The diamond coated die is the
combination of large-size availability
of tungsten carbide and the surface
properties of randomly oriented synthetic
diamond.
As electrical current flows through the
surface of the wire a smooth surface
leads to higher conductivity than was
previously obtainable using tungsten
carbide dies. This can enable the cable
manufacturer to save raw material as
the same conductivity is obtained with a
smaller diameter cable.
At the same time the diamond coated die
reduces the amount of friction; reducing
the amount of power that is required to
bunch, strand or compact the conductor.

For many years Ajex & Turner has been supplying crossheads and extrusion toolings
to the cable industry. The company has been supplying polycrystalline diamond,
tungsten carbide and natural diamond.
With the continuous demand and requirement of the customer, it has made continuous
improvements in the production process, making extrusion tooling which can provide
custom-made solutions to ensure smooth running of the extrusion process.
State-of-the-art technology and accuracy in production gives the product the highest
performance during the manufacturing process. Each of the manufactured tip and
extrusion tools is designed with unique application expertise. The end product will be
a wire having a unique insulation thickness as well as precise conductor centring that
provides the correct electrical characteristics in the finished products.
