THE ARTS
St Edward’s at St John’s Smith Square
2nd February 2015
The event at St John’s Smith Square was a very special occasion, being, as the Warden put
it in his opening address, a ‘once in a lifetime experience’ particularly for the three cello
soloists in Haydn’s
Cello Concerto No.1
, Aaron Gruen (Cowell’s, Fifth Form), Horatio
Holloway (Segar’s, Upper Sixth) and Benedict Swindells (Sing’s, Lower Sixth), and the
soloists in ‘The Heavens are Telling’ from Haydn’s
Creation
, Sasha Holland (Macnamara’s,
Upper Sixth), James Buxton (Apsley, Upper Sixth) and Tom Montgomery (Field House,
Fifth Form). The Concert Band rendered Mozart’s Overture to
The Magic Flute
with great
panache before the delicately poised
Cello Concerto
. The Symphony Orchestra then
performed the final two movements of Haydn’s
Symphony No.101,
the ninth of his 12
‘London’ symphonies, before being joined on the platform by the combined Chapel Choirs
to perform two anthems by Haydn, ‘Insanae et Vanae Curae’ and ‘The Heavens are Telling’.
The performances were worthy tribute to this adopted British composer, an almost exact
contemporary of the church itself.
