METRIC CARAT WEIGHTS

FOR PRECIOUS STONES, METALS AND PEARLS

PPPPfPPPPPPlPPPP

The weight of precious stones is given in metric carats; a

metric carat is divided into 100 cent-carats. A metric

carat =0-2 gramme.

For pearls the grain is used. The grain equals 1/4 carat or

0-05 gramme and is divided into 100 parts.

There are weights for the carat, multiples and submultiples.

They are used for precious stones and pearls. Special weights

in grains do not exist.

To obtain a weight in grains, multiply by 4 the weight in carats.

1 gramme = 5 carats = (5x4) 20 grains.

1 carat

= 0-2 gramme; 1 grain = 0-05 gramme.

The carat is correctly used as expressing the degree of fine

ness, but not as a weight. Pure gold is described as 24 carats.
