Rowing

The Martyrs Boat Club had a busy 2017

entering more boats into more events than

in many years. With the squad growing every

race, we hope OSE hear of the successes

and feel the urge to get back in a boat having

forgotten all the blisters. St Edward’s Martyrs

BC is now on Facebook, search for us in full,

where all events, training sessions and races

are publicised in advance along with all our

success stories.

The summer’s racing saw a victorious quad

of

Andrew Bird

(A, 1991-1996),

Hamish

Roots

(B, 1993-1998), John Wiggins and Tom

Carter (UTRC) beat a Tideway Scullers crew,

containing a certain Alan Campbell, at Henley

Town and Visitors. John Wiggins and

Hamish

Floyd

(F, 1988-1993) were comfortable

winners in the Masters double at Reading

Town Regatta in June. August saw three boats

racing at the City of Oxford Regatta with the

VIII losing, to Wolfson College crews that had

been racing together all summer, by 3 feet and

the 4+ by 3/4 of a length. The eight and four

were from

Hugh Reilly

(B, 2011-2016),

Ben

Sthamer

(B, 2012-2017),

Alex Simmonds

(E,

2007-2012),

Felix Obholzer

(H, 2014-2016),

Dave Willcox

(A, 2014-2016),

Andrew

Scott

(A, 2001-2006),

Rupert Singfield

Special mention to Freya Berkin (game

1 and 2), Fran Jolley (game 3 and 4) and

Helen Baddeley (semis and final) for

volunteering to goal keep for us. All three

did a fantastic job and made some cracking

saves. Alicea Berkin won player of the

tournament for a second year running! The

standard overall was pretty good to be fair,

with some good oppositions.

Teddies worked really really well as a

team, working hard for each other, stringing

together some great passes and defended

really solidly. The tournament ran really

smoothly and was well put on by Alex

and DC as a school - we all had a fab day

and really enjoyed ourselves. Such a great

turn out, really good attitude from all in

attendance and a great result to build on, to

keep momentum for participation!

Men’s Hockey

This year the Martyrs returned to winning

ways to reclaim the Haileybury Sixes title

in remarkable circumstances. With the late

withdrawal of key players and an 11th hour

call for a goalkeeper, the Martyrs squad

was looking a little light, but with the much

needed return of veteran

Peter Swainson

(F, 1995-2000) and goal-scoring 6s

specialist

George Creed

(G, 2005-2010)

there was always hope… The group stages

were navigated relatively easily, with the

Martyrs playing the brand of free flowing,

free scoring hockey much encouraged at

the School in the last 20 years. Goals came

from all over the field with almost every

outfielder getting on the scoresheet.

In the semi-final,

Tanaka Chitsenga

(A,

2012-2017) put in a fantastic performance

in goal to ensure one goal was enough

to secure victory. However, Chitsenga’s

heroics came at quite a cost, with

dehydration brought about by the previous

evening’s antics, compounded by the 30°C

heat, causing an uncontrollable nose-bleed

for the young Martyr, which ultimately

resulted in a trip to hospital with suspected

heat stroke! This left the Martyrs squad

somewhat rattled and ‘keeperless heading

into the final against old rivals Framlingham.

The final saw Swainson given the kicking

back duties and he quickly commanded the

troops from the back, leading a remarkable

assault on the Framlingham goal. The

Martyrs twice went ahead, only to be

pegged back each time. Some ill-discipline

late-on saw Baggs sent to the sin-bin for the

closing stages of the game but the Martyrs

managed to ride out the power play and

the game ended 3-3.  Golden goal extra-

time was called to decide the winner, but

in the end only two minutes were needed

to secure a remarkable victory, with a well

won penalty corner expertly dispatched by

Baggs in to the bottom corner, much to the

dismay of the Framlingham and the delight

of the Martyrs! For the 4th time in five years

it was ‘Saint Edward, King and Martyr’ that

would be engraved on the most coveted

Old Boys’ hockey trophy in the land.
