After some delays from weather, the Martyrs
hosted Old Cliftonians on Upper One in the
1st Round of the Cricketer Cup, winning the
toss and electing to bat. After an explosive
start from
Miles Hammond
(H, 2009-2014)
(41) the first wicket of
Joe Barrett
(B, 2010-
2014) (4) fell. This failed to slow down the
scoring rate as 2015 1st XI captain
Calvin
Dickinson
(C, 2010-2015) (27) continued in
the same vein as Hammond. After just nine
overs the Martyrs were 70-1 and looked set
for a formidable score, but the loss of two
quick wickets checked our progress, falling
to 84-3, and bringing stand-in-captain
John
Barrett
(E, 2000-2005) (46) to join
Feroz
Baig
(H, 2009-2014) (48) at the crease. The
two re-built the innings at a very reasonable
rate and at 177-3 off 30 overs it looked
like a huge score was back on the cards.
Unfortunately, in true Martyrs fashion, five
quick wickets fell and we were reduced to
185-8. Unable to recover from this, we were
eventually all out for a disappointing 204 in
just the 45th over.
In the field, we started well with an early
wicket for
Harry Sutton
(C, 2000-2005)
(1-28) and, although we managed to take
regular wickets through
Freddie Simon
(F, 2008-2013) (2-27) and
Ruairi Willis
(F,
2008-2013) (2-11), the total was always
never quite enough. Old Cliftonians reached
the target in the 36th over with 3 wickets
in hand to rather prematurely end another
Cricketer Cup campaign.
In the traditional fixture against the
School at Gaudy, the Martyrs took regular
wickets to restrict the 1st XI to 192-8 off
40 overs, with 1995 1st XI captain
Nick
Prior
(C, 1990-1995) rolling back the years
to take 3-50, including the key wicket of
the 1st XI’s School batting record breaking
captain,
AJ Woodland
, and
Gus Knott
(H, 2010-2015) taking 3-27. In reply, the
Martyrs started reasonably with
Freddie
Kerr-Dineen
(C, 2007-2012) and
George
Chaffer
(F, 2007-2012) putting on an
opening stand of 34, but we began to lose
wickets at all to regular intervals to be
left wobbling at 57-5.
Peter Swainson
(F, 1995-2000) joined 1994 1st XI captain
Oliver Slipper
(C, 1989-1994) at the
crease to re-build the innings, but just as
we were looking to accelerate the scoring
Swainson edged to the ‘keeper to leave the
score at 111-6. The Martyrs eventually fell
30 runs short, reaching 160-8 with Slipper
top scoring with 38. Another competitive
and very enjoyable fixture against a strong
School XI.
