REPORTING LATE TO WORK
Note:
If you are reporting late to work or calling to report an unscheduled absence, you should make every effort to speak with your
supervisor directly or leave a number where you can be reached. By doing so, you can discuss any pending projects or meetings that
may need to be addressed during your absence.
Associates are expected to report to work at their scheduled time each day. You must notify your supervisor of
a pending absence or late arrival before your normal start time.
When there is no alternative, you may get in touch with another
previously designated contact
, or — as a final
option — you may leave a message with your supervisor via voice mail, but still no later than your normal start
time. A return phone number must be included with your message so you can be contacted, if necessary.
You and your supervisor may make arrangements for you to make up the hours missed during the workday (if
appropriate); otherwise, the time away will be assessed as personal leave, vacation, sick leave or leave without pay.
Repeated tardiness, with or without appropriate notification, is grounds for disciplinary action up to and
including termination.
SCHEDULED ABSENCE
A scheduled absence is leave requested and approved by the supervisor prior to the time you use it (e.g.,
scheduled doctor appointments, vacation).
UNSCHEDULED ABSENCE
An unscheduled absence occurs when sick or other leave is not requested and approved in advance by the
supervisor (e.g., when you call the department manager or supervisor in the morning to report that you will
not be at work that day). You are generally permitted up to four unscheduled absences before action is taken,
although circumstances may result in more immediate action.
At the fifth unscheduled absence, an associate may receive a verbal reminder from his/her supervisor and a copy
of these guidelines. (A continuous absence of more than one day for the same illness is treated as one absence.)
After the sixth unscheduled absence, the associate will usually receive a written reminder of these guidelines
and a copy will be placed in his/her personnel file. After the seventh unscheduled absence, the associate may
be placed on probation and may not receive pay for the absence without written verification from a doctor or
health care provider verifying the need for the absence. Repeated absenteeism is unacceptable and will result in
counseling and — if not corrected — will lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
ILLNESS DURING THE WORKDAY
It may occasionally become necessary for you to leave work early because of personal illness or the illness of a
dependent. Whether or not an early departure is counted as an unplanned absence depends on if this happens
frequently or only occasionally and how much time in the day has elapsed. Managers are responsible for
ensuring that this policy is not abused. Health rooms where you can rest for short periods are available on the
6th floor at corporate headquarters.
