finished in 1757.

T h is hospital, divided into tw o

sets o f w ards, each com posed o f an eq ual num b er,

the one m edical, the oth er su rg ic al, has accomm o­

dation for 4 0 0— 4 5 0 p atien ts — the y early av erag e

w hich receive re lief is estim ated a t 3 0 0 0 , of w hich

two thirds are free p atients. It includes a spacious

co u rt planted w ith trees w h e re, on fine days, those

p a tie n ts , w ho are so far convalescent, are allow ed

to enjoy a ir and exercise. B esides the public w ards

th ere are in th is h o sp ital ro o m s , called in D a n ish

, to w hich p atien ts in easy cir­

cum stances are adm itted for a h igh er c h arg e ; and

it is a comm on c u sto m , even am ong the w ealth ier

and noble classes, to rem ove the sick m em ber o f a

fam ily to one o f these p riv ate ap artm e n ts o f the

h o sp ita l, either to p rev en t the spread of fever at

hom e, or th a t they m ay be a tte n d ed , in an y case

w h atever, m edical or s u rg ic a l,

T h e h ead p hy sician has the privilege, if he chooses

to exercise it, o f ordering the body of every patient,

w h eth er public or p rivate, dying in the hospital, to

be dissected.
