PROFESSIONAL ITEMS
Offer to act for both parties.
A solicitor acting for a purchaser torwarded to
the vendor requisitions on title together with a
letter containing the following paragraph :—
“ I f you have a solicitor acting for you will you
please pass the requisitions on to him, but if you
have no solicitor acting for you we will be pleased
to act for you at the reduced fee applicable where
the one solicitor acts for both the vendor and the
purchaser. I f there is no one acting for you,
please advise us immediately.”
The Council of the Law Institute o f Victoria has
ruled that such conduct constitutes a breach of the
Solicitors (Professional Conduct and Practice) Rules.
The Council is also of opinion that it is contrary
to both the spirit and the letter of the Solicitors
(Professional Conduct and Practice) Rules for a 1
solicitor to advertise that he has trust monies to
lend even though the advertisement contains merely 1
his name and address and does not disclose the fact
that he is a solicitor (Law Institute Journal, Victoria,
Australia).
Publicity
A Public Relations Committee has been established
by the Queensland Law Society for the purpose of 1
acting as a link between the profession and the
public and to enable statements to be made on j
matters of general interest to the profession at short
notice. Certain proposals for giving publicity to
the work carried on by solicitors are now under
consideration. It is the aim o f the Society to make
known to the public the advantages o f seeking legal
advice as an ordinary business precaution.
