Who would have thunk that
the seventh film in a franchise
could be both the most
enjoyable installment and the
most successful ($1.5 billion in
global box office bucks)? That’s
Fast & Furious 7
, an action
juggernaut that’s so proudly
ridiculous and relentless, you
can’t help but have a good time.
This time round Dominic Toretto
(Vin Diesel) and his “family”
(Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Michelle
Rodriguez) are recruited by a government agent (hello
Kurt Russell) to rescue an abducted hacker (
GoT
’s
Nathalie Emmanuel); Jason Statham is also on board,
as well as the vengeful brother of
F&F
6
’s British bad
guy. The action set pieces are gleefully absurd – cars
are dropped from an aircraft, aimed at a helicopter,
and sent flying through Abu Dhabi skyscrapers –
and the heroes even more indestructible. The
F&F
franchise understands exactly what its fans want, and
number seven gives them more than they need; plus,
the touching tribute to late star Paul Walker that closes
the film will make grown men weep.

FAST & FURIOUS 7
In the competitive arena of
Young Adult adaptations, some
series live to fight another
day, while others die after a
single installment. Veronica
Roth’s
Divergent Series
has
been tough enough to spawn
a four-film franchise, of which
Insurgent
is the second. Set
in a post-apocalypse Chicago,
society has been divided into
five factions according to human virtues. But if you
possess free will and independent thought – like Tris
(Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) – you’re
deemed ‘Divergent’ and a threat to the status quo.
With the factions on the brink of civil war at the end
of
Divergent
,
Insurgent
picks up with Tris and Four on
the run from power-mad Erudite leader Jeanine (Kate
Winslet), who has vowed to eliminate the Divergents.
The pair find allies in the Factionless, led by Four’s
mother (Naomi Watts), and there’s also the issue of
a mysterious box containing a message from the
society’s founders which can only be opened by a pure
Divergent, making Tris’s capture a priority.
Insurgent
expands the series’ mythology, delving deeper into
its class system and characters, and advances the
narrative in new and unexpected directions – which is
what any good sequel should do.
