Seeds of
Revolution

s dawn broke on May 28, 1754, the French soldiers camped
in the hollow began to stir. They stretched their legs. They
gathered dry twigs for cooking fires. In the dim light, they
failed to notice shadowy figures creeping onto the rock ledges that
overlooked the hollow.
Presently, one of the French soldiers heard a noise or saw movement
(Above) American militiamen attack a band of Native Americans in western Virginia dur-
ing the French and Indian War (1754–1763). This conflict, pitting the French and their Native
American allies against the British Army and colonists in North America, soon expanded into a
world war, known in Europe as the Seven Years’ War.
