Two objectives

Radiotherapy: deliberately uses radiation on patients to produce

deterministic effects

(tumor cell kill) - in this context some

deterministic effects and stochastic effects are accepted (=

side effects

)

Radiation protection: to manage and control exposures to ionizing radiation

to: 1) prevent and minimize the risk of

deterministic effects

which are

NOT intended: accidental medical exposure and ‘unacceptable’ radiation

effects to the patient (=

complications

) due to mistakes or suboptimal

irradiation practice; 2) minimize the risk of

detrimental effect

to

others; 3) reduce the probability of

stochastic effects

to the extent

reasonably achievable
