Classification of effects on the tumor
Uniform criteria for reporting
response
,
recurrence, disease-free
interval, and toxicity were proposed in 1979 after a meeting on the
Standardization of Reporting Results of Cancer Treatment
and were
subsequently widely accepted.
These
response
criteria, known as the
World Health Organization
(WHO) criteria
, are based largely on tumor measurements in two
dimensions (the longest perpendicular diameters in the axial plane).
