Responsible Practices

Regulatory Agencies + Legislation

We take great pride in the quality and craftsmanship of our products. Attention to design,

materials, safety and construction are our priority; therefore, Williams-Sonoma Inc. has

established a vast network of Quality Assurance and Legal teams to ensure we are

compliant with the following acts and regulatory agencies:

The state of California Techinical Bullentin 117- 2013

The state of California revised Technical Bulletin 117 (TB117). This standard makes sure that

upholstered indoor furniture meets flammability requirements adopted by the state of

California. It is widely used throughout the United States and was originally enacted to

slow the time it takes a piece of upholstered furniture from burning. The new standards

outline the changes in flammability testing saying that as of January 1, 2014, manufacturers

may transition from the open flame test process adopted and mandated in 1975 to the new

methods for smolder resistance of cover fabrics, barrier materials, resilient filling materials,

and decking materials for us in upholstered furniture.

Instead of injecting chemical into upholstery foam, manufacturers can line furniture with

fire shield, or use flame-retardant fabrics.

All of our furniture complies with TB 117 and customers can check the label on their

furniture to see that it is compliant.
