Chapter 5

College

I attended New River Community College in Dublin,

Virginia for two and half years. I visited the campus

several times at the end of my senior year and

during the summer to become comfortable with the

transition. I met with a counselor who saw that I had

test accommodations. I went to the counseling center

to take my tests and I used a tape recorder in class.

I went to academic assistance from time to time, they

tutored me in some of my classes, and I did homework

there sometimes so I would not have to worry about

doing it at home. I listened to my tape recorder and

used my note cards so I would make good grades

on my test. I had a counselor to read my tests to me

because I needed a quiet place to take my tests.

The most humorous thing that happened at the

community college was that one time my teacher got

a haircut and I looked at her kind of funny and asked

her about her haircut and she told me about it. I told

her that I did not like it. The good news was that she

thought that it was funny; it did not hurt her feelings.

That same teacher and I always hugged each other

and began on a positive note every day.
