Why do we use synchrotron radiation?
For microbeams we require
1.
Parallel beams
- To preserve sharp dose gradients
- To guarantee high output factors
2.
Photon energy of around 100 keV
- Otherwise electron scattering will cause large beam penumbras
3.
High dose rates
- To avoid dose blurring by organ motion in the micrometre range
