SKILL 7-9
Making an occupied bed
Refer to Dempsey, Hillege and Hill, Fundamentals of Nursing and Midwifery:
A Person-Centred Approach to Care 2e, Chapter 37, Hygiene
Goal:
The bed linen is applied without injury to the patient or
nurse.
 1. Identify the patient.
 2. Check the medical order or clinical pathway/care plan.
 3. Introduce yourself, explain the rationale for the
procedure to the patient and family, and obtain consent.
 4. Gather the necessary equipment.
Equipment:
clean sheet/s (fitted or flat as required), bedside
table or chair, blanket, quilt, pillowcase/s, drawsheet or
protective underlay.
 5. Undertake a risk assessment, if indicated.
 6. Perform hand hygiene.
 7. Put on personal protective equipment (PPE), if indicated.
 8. Ensure that patient privacy is maintained.
 9. Place the bed at an appropriate and comfortable working
height.
10. Lower the bed side rail nearest to you, leaving the
opposite side rail up. Place the bed in a flat position
unless contraindicated.
11. Check the bed linen for the patient’s personal items.
Disconnect the call bell or any tubes/drains from bed
linen.
12. Place a blanket over the patient. Have the patient hold on
to the blanket while you reach under it and remove the
top linen. Leave the top sheet in place if a blanket is not
used. Fold linen that is to be reused over the back of a
chair. Discard soiled linen in the laundry bag or hamper.
Do not place on floor or furniture. Do not hold soiled
linen against your uniform.
13. Assist the patient to turn towards the opposite side of the
bed and reposition the pillow under the patient’s head.
14. Loosen all the bottom linen from the head, foot and side
of the bed.
15. Fan-fold soiled linen as close to the patient as possible.
