Assisting the patient to shave
Refer to Dempsey, Hillege and Hill, Fundamentals of Nursing and Midwifery:
A Person-Centred Approach to Care 2e, Chapter 37, Hygiene
Goal:
The patient’s skin is free of unwanted hair without
evidence of trauma to the skin.
1. Identify the patient.
2. Check the medical order or clinical pathway/care plan.
3. Introduce yourself, explain the rationale for the
procedure to the patient and family, and obtain consent.
4. Gather the necessary equipment.
Equipment:
towels, washcloth, waterproof pad, razor, shaving
cream or soap, basin with warm water (43°C to 46°C).
5. Undertake a risk assessment, if indicated.
6. Perform hand hygiene.
7. Put on personal protective equipment (PPE), if indicated.
8. Ensure that patient privacy is maintained.
9. Place the bed at an appropriate and comfortable working
height.
10. Cover the patient’s chest with a towel or waterproof pad.
11. Moisten the area to be shaved with a washcloth.
12. Dispense shaving cream into the palm of your hand.
Apply cream or warm soap lather to the area to be shaved
in a layer about 1 cm thick.
13. With one hand, pull the skin taut at the area to be shaved.
Using a smooth stroke, begin shaving.
If shaving the face
,
shave with the direction of hair growth in downward,
short strokes.
If shaving a leg
, shave against the hair in
upward, short strokes.
If shaving an underarm
, use short,
upward strokes.
14. Wash off residual shaving cream and dry.
15. If the patient requests, apply aftershave or lotion to the
area shaved.
16. Return the patient to a comfortable position.
17. Raise the bed side rail and lower the bed.
18. Remove used PPE/equipment and dispose of them in the
appropriate receptacle.
19. Perform hand hygiene.
