ONLY THE ESSENTIALS
One of biology’s biggest achievements in
2016 was intentionally as small as possible:
building a bacteriumwith only 473 genes.
That pint-size genetic blueprint is a mile-
stone in a decades-long effort to create an
organism containing just the bare essentials
of life. Ultimately, such cell templates could
transform the field of medicine, as well as
agricultural and chemical industries.
