PARTICLE GHOSTS
Deep inside a granite mountain at Daya
Bay, a nuclear reactor facility not far
fromHong Kong, sensitive detectors
(shown) are seeking a new form of
neutrino, one of nature’s most ghostly
and abundant elementary particles.
Potentially transformative results,
reported fromDaya Bay in 2016,
suggested the possibility of a fourth
type of neutrino, but evidence for this
“sterile neutrino” is still mixed.
