Kistenfabrik

With 106 cable drums – 68 transport-
and 38 production drums – Borkener
Kistenfabrik
has
supported
the
Netherlands in handling the energy
revolution.
The cable drums with a diameter of
4.2 metres were used by the Dutch cable
manufacturer Prysmian to produce
and transport power cables in order to
connect two o shore wind farms in the
North Sea at a converter station in Diele
near Papenburg.
Approximately 150km of 300,000 V
high-voltage underground cables 125mm
in diameter had to be transported via
heavy truck load due to their weight of 40
tons per reel.
Thanks to the larger production facility
– added in 2008 and the recently
modernised and expanded machinery –
the development and construction of the
cable drums has been handled quickly.
The drums, which were needed for the
production of cables, also posed a real
challenge.

With ve lines now in production, BWE’s
SheathEx™ process is becoming the
new alternative to seamless aluminium
sheathing of high voltage cables. A sixth
installation will be commissioned during
the rst half of this year.
The SheathEx process is an extension
of the well established Conform™ and
Conklad™ continuous extrusion tech-
nology.
The SheathEx machine extrudes a
continuous and seamless aluminium tube
from two 12mm diameter rods around a
high voltage cable core.
BWE collaborated with high voltage
power cable producers in China to
develop the product and process
speci cations for this new and unique
technology.
