Shaw Metal Solutions grows
METAL forming and spinning specialist
Shaw Metal Solutions has increased
turnover by 30 per cent for the second
year running by investing in the
latest state-of-the-art manufacturing
equipment.
The company invested £35,000 in
a new XYZ milling machine as part of
ongoing expansion plans and is now
planning for further growth with a new
£150,000 CNC automatic lathe.
Funding was secured from asset
finance specialist Academy Leasing
when the banks failed to deliver. The
move will allow Shaw Metal to further
increase turnover and to expand into
new markets.
“With capacity for large volume
production or bespoke projects, we
already pride ourselves on offering
one of the most comprehensive metal
forming packages in the UK,” said Shaw
Metal Solutions managing director
Georgina St Hilaire.
“By securing funding through
Academy Leasing, we have now been
able to invest in our own tool-making
facility. This is a fantastic advantage
which allows us to offer our clients a
one-stop-shop for tooling, samples and
final products, and gives us total control
over both quality and turnaround times.
“It’s also helped us to move into new
sectors like oil and gas exploration. We
now need an additional CNC automatic
lathe to service the latest wave of new
business growth.” As a funder and
broker, Academy Leasing was able
to facilitate the operation by taking
advantage of its own funds and extensive
funding lines with a panel of banks and
specialist finance houses.

Rafter ships pipe mill upgrade
RAFTER Equipment Corporation has
shipped an RT-5500 weld squeeze box
for a major North American OCTG pipe
producer.
The box is part of an upgrade to the
customer’s existing HFI pipe mill, and is
sized for up to 177.8mm OD x 9.5mm
wall (7" OD x 0.375" wall) HSLA steel
pipe.
The
Rafter-designed
machine
includes motorised push-on-centre
squeeze roll adjustments, linear
displacement
transducers,
high
capacity tapered roller bearings within
the roll tools as well as a removable
head roll assembly for quick-change.
In addition to the weld box, the
upgrade includes a new single-sided
turkshead straightener with two-axis
remote motorised adjustment with
linear displacement transducers.
The upgrade also included a
sizing mill drive train upgrade. The
existing single-motor, three-gearbox
arrangement was replaced with three
individual motor drive units. The drive
electrics were designed to integrate
with the existing line electrics.
Rafter manufactures tube mills, pipe
mills, roll forming machines, cut-off
machines, auxiliary and various other
related tube and pipe mill machinery.
Additional services including rebuilding
and upgrading mill equipment are also
available.

Roll forming equipment maker
orders two ‘Weldac’ solid-state
induction welders
EFD Induction, one of the world’s largest induction heating companies, recently
received an order for two of its ‘Weldac’ induction welders from a major North
American roll forming company. According to EFD Induction US sales manager Mark
Andrus, the welders will be used to weld profiles and beams. “Yet again,” commented
Mr Andrus, “companies with the highest productivity and quality demands turn to EFD
Induction when choosing their induction welders. These orders underline the unrivalled
throughput and reliability offered by our Weldac systems.”
Weldac is the name given to EFD Induction’s range of solid-state induction welders.
Featuring patented driver innovations, Weldacs use rugged IGBT transistors that are
virtually short-circuit proof. Weldacs also feature continuous electronic load matching.
The use of diode rectifiers means Weldacs offer a high constant power factor of 0.95 at
all power levels, while also eliminating the need for costly reactive power compensation
capacitors.
