AtlasCopcobacks JacarandaWater Drive in thewake of SouthAfrica’s drought

Sustainable productivity solutions pro-

vider Atlas Copco bequeathed a helping

hand to relieve the plight of people in

some of South Africa’s drought-stricken

areas.

Atlas Copco South Africa’s Managing

Director, Frans van Niekerk, became

aware of local radio station, Jacaranda

FM’s water drive initiative in conjunction

with Pureau. “Pureau happens to be our

bottled water supplier and recognising

the dire need of our country’s people,

we decided to heed the call for support

in donating water to areas that were

severely affected by water deficiencies,”

explains Atlas Copco South Africa and

Sub-Sahara Communications Manager,

Kgothatso Ntsie. Ntsie adds that this

particular initiative was of special signifi-

cance owing to the fact that Atlas Copco

has a CSI initiative called ‘Water for All’.

“Through the Water for All project, we

set out to make clean, potable water a

possibility for all. The more recent ben-

eficiaries of our initiative were learners

from the Mhlazane Primary School in

Rorke’s Drift, Kwa-Zulu Natal.”

Atlas Copco’s donation of R100 000

to the Jacaranda FMwater drive equated

to 41 500 litres of water.

The entire initiative along with the

involvement of other organisations culmi-

nated in a total of 73 740 litres of water

comprising of 14 748 five litre bottles

donated and delivered to communities in

the North West and Free State Provinces.

VEGA has introduced a new display and

calibration module, PLICSCOM with Blue-

tooth, which makes the adjustment of sen-

sor parameters so much easier. VEGA is the

first instrument manufacturer in its field to

bring a Bluetooth solution to market.

Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 technol-

ogy the user can now make adjustments

without having to uninstall the sensor or

even remove the sensor housing cover.

This means adjustments can be made

from a safe working area up to 25 m away,

eliminating the need to climb up high silos

in dangerous conditions or to operate in

hazardous areas.

With no wiring necessary, adjustments

are made using a smartphone or tablet via

Bluetooth Low Energy technology. Simply

download the VEGATools app which is avail-

able on IOS and Android platforms. The

layout of the application follows the same

logical process as PACTware.

If the sensor is accessible, a magnetic

pen allows contactless adjustment right

through the viewing window of the closed

lid. The instruments are thus always well

protected against bad weather and soiling.

The magnetic pen operation and

Bluetooth communication offer another

advantage: costly and involved authorisa-

tion for working in hazardous areas is not

necessary.

However, the best feature is the back-

ward compatibility, which means that

the Bluetooth PLICSCOM can be used on

the entire installed base of VEGA plics

®

sensors, many in operation since 2002.
