D

id you know Mudvayne used

to wear facepaint?Tamara

Schilling knows it, because she

first discovered them at her very

first Big Day Out in 2001. “I was

16 at the time, and it was the

one where Rammstein headlined

with Limp Bizkit,” the Music

Co-ordinator at JB Ipswich tells

us. “Yep, back in the day. It was

awesome.” A huge fan of glam

rock and metal, Schilling says the

‘gateway drug’ to her fascination

laughs. “’If anybody touches this,

you’re in trouble!’ And it’s the

only way that the final concert is

available on DVD too, because they

haven’t released it yet.”

Ipswich is half an hour out of

Brisbane, but there’s a seriously

dedicated local scene going on. Last

year Schilling lent her social media

services to the Ipswich council’s

'Live & Local' night; in her 15 years

around the Ipswich scene she’s

seen a lot of talent that deserves

a platform. Her connections

prompted her to get involved, and

she ended up organising a sold-out

gig for her mates’ group NickTart

Band. “Local bands can play [at the

council venue] once a month on

Fridays. We packed it out, which

was awesome!” She has plans to

continue promoting in this fresh

year, with an EP launch on the

horizon.

In terms of extra-curricular live

music, Schilling recently saw an

acoustic set by Robbie James (of

pop-rock four-piece GANGgajang),

and of course made it to Gun N’

Roses. “I took the day off for it,

because I’m one of those people

that gets there early and lines up for

the barrier,” Schilling confesses. Her

diamond general admission ticket

was absolutely worth it: “Not even

10 metres from the stage! I got the

barrier [in front of] Slash,

and it was amazing.”

with the genre started with

Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx. She has

all the SIXX:AM titles on CD and

vinyl – “I have to get them on

both formats!” – and one of her

prized vinyl possessions is the

Mötley Crüe boxset that came

out November last year. “It has

all their albums on CD and vinyl,

signed pictures of each of the

bandmembers, and pics [taken

by] Mick Mars. It’s in a tombstone

box. I opened it so carefully,” she
