The methane in gas hydrates comes from the breakdown of organic matter, the remains of dead plants and animals. Biogenic
methane results when microbes consume the organic matter and expel methane as a waste product. Thermogenic methane comes
from far below Earth’s surface, where high pressures and temperatures cook ancient, buried organic matter, producing methane, as
well as oil and other hydrocarbons.
