ABB has won an order from Powergrid
Corporation of India Ltd to supply
equipment
for
the
Champa
transmission substation in the central
Indian state of Chhattisgarh.
The Champa substation will receive
power at 765kV and 400kV, and is
part of Powergrid’s plan to build a
stronger national grid in India.
ABB’s project scope includes the
design,
engineering,
supply,
installation and commissioning of the
765kV and 400kV switchyards,
including the civil works. Key
products to be supplied include circuit
breakers,
current
transformers,
capacitive voltage transformers, surge
arrestors and protection, control and
relay panels.
ABB will also supply an IEC 61850,
open standards based substation
automation system to facilitate
communication
between
the
numerous
devices
within
the
substation and beyond.
Powergrid, the central transmission
utility in India, has the mandate for
planning, coordination, supervision
and control over complete inter-state
transmission system in the country.
The utility owns and operates about
86,190km of transmission lines and
138 substations with transformation
capacity of about 95,125 MVA (mega-
volt-ampere).
It is responsible for the transmission
of over half the total power generated
in the country, and has already
contracted ABB to work on other
765kV substation projects.
