Scarlett Johansson is purrrrrrfect as the seductive
snake Kaa in the reboot of
The Jungle Book
.
S
carlett Johansson
has fond
memories of the
original 1967 animated
version of
The Jungle Book
.
“I remember that
soundtrack well,” she
recalls. “It was so popular
when I was a kid.
Bare
Necessities
was on
constant repeat for every
kid my age. And the idea
of this jungle kid being
raised by animals was just
fantastic.”
So the actress needed
little persuasion to lend
her voice to the character of Kaa,
the seductive but sinister python,
when director Jon Favreau came
calling. The pair had previously
worked together on
Iron Man 2
and
Chef
, but it was her voice-only
performance in Spike Jonze’s
Her
that convinced the director she
would make a perfect Kaa.
“Ever since I was really
young, I’ve loved doing voice
work,” Johansson says. “For me,
the opportunity to play Kaa as
envisioned by Jon was so exciting.
The snake from the animated film
is a boy. He’s a friendlier, goofier
version of the character.
“In this film, Kaa seduces
and entraps Mowgli with her
storytelling. She’s the mirror into
Mowgli’s past. It was thrilling
to reinvent this character in this
rendering of the story.”
The character is designed to be
intimidating yet believable and the
actress did get the chance to see
what Kaa would look like before
laying down her vocal parts. “Kaa
is magnificent,” she enthuses.
“The way that she moves is very
alluring, almost coquettish. It was
important for me to see how she
looks in proportion to Mowgli to
help inform the presence and
intensity of my voice. The audience
will see this creature through the
innocent eyes of this small boy
Mowgli – they’ll become part of his
world."

The Jungle Book

WELCOME
TO THE
JUNGLE
T
he credit cards of die-hard Led Zeppelin fans are set to take another
battering with the reissue of their acclaimed
BBC Sessions
.
First released nearly 20 years ago, the two-disc set featured the recordings the
rock legends made for BBC radio between 1969 and 1971.
However, the newly remastered
The Complete BBC Sessions
will feature
eight previously unreleased radio recordings, including three from a long-lost
BBC session from 1969. Originally broadcast in April 1969, the session
included three songs:
I Can’t Quit You Baby
,
You Shook
Me
and the only recorded performance of
Sunshine
.
As with previous Zep reissues,
The Complete BBC
Sessions
will be available in a variety of formats,
including a three-CD album, a five-LP vinyl edition and
a super deluxe boxset featuring both the vinyl and
CD sets, plus a 48-page book filled with photos of the
band, the recording locations, BBC memorabilia and
session information.
A
t last, here's the movie for the GoPro generation.
Hardcore
Henry
is a high octane action flick, shot completely in the first
person perspective; it's a collaboration between Timur Bekmambetov
(the maker of
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
)
and fellow Eastern
European director Ilya Naishuller.
Viewers see through the eyes of Henry, a cyborg seeking the
kidnappers of his wife. The wild set pieces called for a brand new way
of shooting, and though helmet-mounted GoPro gear is common, the
filmmakers wanted an experience closer to eye level, requiring an
innovative camera rig that could be worn like a mask. The sevices of
12 stunt personnel were utilised depending on their area of speciality,
from aerialists right through to professional horse riders.
The jawdropping result has been an audience sensation, with
Hardcore Henry
becoming one of the highest grossing indies of 2016.
Strap in for the unprecedented thrill ride of
Hardcore Harry
when it
comes to DVD and Blu-ray on August 3.
