Mr. Henderson earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Centenary College of
Louisiana, and a master’s degree in history from the University of Arizona. He then
spent three years in the Peace Corps, serving in Colombia, before earning his doctorate
in Latin American history in 1972 at Texas Christian University.
Charles J. Shields
is the author of 20 books for young people. He has degrees in
English and history from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Before turning
to writing full time, he was chairman of the English and guidance departments at
Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Flossmoor, Illinois. He lives in Homewood, a
suburb of Chicago, with his wife, Guadalupe, a former elementary school principal
and now an educational consultant to the Chicago Public Schools.
