part if I didn’t trust my instincts in terms of the
filmmaking,” Affleck told
Entertainment Weekly
at
the time.
The actor chose to invest the character with
the same gravitas he saw in the film. Indeed,
Affleck’s Batman may well be the most brooding
iteration of the Dark Knight to date.
“I didn’t get to create the character,” he
explains. “I had to recreate something and hope
that it fits into our idea of who Batman is and
hope people would accept my nuances on the
character.
“Some people might see this as just a comic
book or superhero movie – not that serious,"
he continues. "To me, it was quite serious, and
something of an honour. I wanted to do what
Zack wanted, whose vision I thought was pretty
extraordinary. I didn’t want to let him down.
From my point of view – particularly given that
this was influenced by a particular set of comic
books that I also felt really strongly about – I
really wanted to get it right.”
The comic books he’s referring to are Frank
Miller’s
The Dark Knight Returns
, a four-issue
series which culminates with a confrontation
between Batman and Superman. First published
in 1986, it has been a major influence for Snyder.
“Not just in this movie, but other movies
I’ve made, because I’m a big fan of [Miller],”
the director admits. “When I made
Batman
v Superman
I really wanted to honour his
influence on me as an artist, so, in a lot of
ways, that’s what you get when you see
the film.”

Joe Versus the Volcano
A story of love, lava and burning desire.
Terminally ill Tom Hanks must choose
between sacrifice by volcano and romance
with Meg Ryan. Pick the winner.
Freddy vs. Jason
Place your bets! This splatter
smackdown between Elm Street's dream
demon and Crystal Lake's slayer was a
big winner at the box office.
Alien vs. Predator
"Whoever wins... we lose." The truth is
in the tagline of this misguided melee,
which managed to kill off two fantastic
franchises with one blow.
Kramer vs. Kramer
A bitter divorce and custody battle
packs considerable emotional punch
for the viewer, but this Oscar-winning
drama refuses to take sides.
