“Arming Staff: The Critical Decisions”
Travis Thompson,
Director of Risk Management, Ohio School Plan
Moderator: Timothy W. Dettwiller,
Madison-Plains Local Schools
Any violence targeting schools or the public is a cause for great
concern. Recent incidents have once again stunned our nation and
renewed discussions on the presence of deadly weapons. The decision
to arm staff remains a local school board action. A thorough and
comprehensive review of a district’s safety and security measures must
be part of this critical decision-making process.

This session will provide examples of how school districts are
attempting to meet their permanent improvement and capital planning
needs without increasing taxes. Attendees will learn about approaches
to convert an expiring bond issue, a decrease in bond millage,
changes in assessed valuation, expiring emergency levies, and other
revenue sources utilized in public education. Specifically, Bexley City
Schools will provide an explanation of their approach to this process
and the benefits it provided to the school district.
