Cable manufacturer Tratos Cavi SpA has won a four year contract
to supply superconducting wire for the world ITER reactor and the
Japanese JT60SA. The superconducting cable-in-conduit will be
used in the construction of magnets for the projects.
ITER is an international project to design and build an
experimental fusion reactor based on the tokamak concept. The
project, currently under construction in southern France, is to
demonstrate the feasibility of energy production by controlled
thermonuclear fusion.
The tender for the production of superconducting wire was put
together by the Italian National Agency for New Technologies
(ENEA) in conjunction with Tratos and Criotec (a specialist in
components operating at extremely low temperatures). The
excellent results achieved from the prototypes enabled the group
to participate in the tendering process.
Tratos will be involved in the first stage of the contract, processing
specialised superconducting material at its plant in Pieve Santo
Stefano in Italy, after which it will be transported to Criotec
near Turin for final assembly. In addition, the central tube of the
superconductor will be produced by Tratos at its UK Knowsley
plant.
ICAS (Italian Consortium on Applied Superconductivity) has
been formed to manage the contract. The complete project will
be coordinated and overseen by ENEA to ensure the supplied
components are of the highest quality.

Caterpillar that saves space and energy
Rosendahl has introduced a new, updated and extended
portfolio of caterpillars for the wire and cable industry.
ROCA caterpillars are designed for more efficient cable
production, especially of medium- and large-sized cables. Due
to a new synchronisation concept the power transmission of
both belts is equal; as a result, strain on the cable and energy
consumption are both reduced.
To cover a wide range of products the ROCA caterpillars are
available in different sizes. The individual models are available
with gripping length of between 1,200mm and 3,000mm and
with maximum traction forces of up to 44,000 N. The design is
modular, allowing for an optimised configuration of speed,
traction force and gripping length, according to the individual
requirement.
The main advantages of the ROCA are:
Wide range to suit many products
•
Direct AC – drive system
•
Exact belt guiding
•
Low noise level
•
Low energy consumption
•
Space-saving design
•
Each ROCA is equipped with a control cabinet mounted on
the machine. This allows an easy mechanical and electrical
integration into an existing extrusion line and makes ROCA
caterpillars a solution for any upgrade business. Guide rollers
at the inlet and the outlet of the machine, an integrated air
pressure reservoir and an accurate belt guiding system are
further features of the new ROCA.

business solutions
for the wire and cable industry.
InnoVites and its Turkish partner PargeSoft will be the
implementation partners for Vatan Kablo. InnoVites’
industry-specific solution integrates business processes from
cable design to production, planning and delivery.
CableBuilder is a popular and powerful cable design software
from Cimteq Ltd, the industry partner of InnoVites. Both
applications are specifically designed for the wire and cable
industry and deliver strong functionality to support specific
business processes in the industry.
Oğuzhan Tütüncü, CEO at Vatan Kablo, commented: “The
out-of-the-box integration with CableBuilder is one of these
strong features that will help us to reduce the costs of product
data management. I also expect that Vatan Kablo will benefit
from the strong commitment of InnoVites to the Turkish wire
and cable industry. InnoVites will complement PargeSoft in
the implementation project.”
