January.—From the Roman Janus, who presided over'

the beginning of everything.

February.—From Februus, a Roman divinity, identical

with Pluto.

Marcu.—From Mars,the Roman god of war.

April.—Lat. Aprilis; from Aperire, to open, as the

buds in spring.

May.—Lat. Mains. Maia,a Roman divinity, was wor

shiped on the first day of this month.

June.—Juno,a wife of Jupiter,worshiped as the Queen

of Heaven.

July (Julius.)—From Julius Caesar, who was born in

this month.

August.—Named by Augustus Caesar, after himself,

upon gaining several victories.

September(septem,or 7.)—Theseventh month in Roman

calendar.

October (octo, or 8.)—Eighth month of Roman year.

November (novem, or 9.)—The ninth month in Roman

calendar.

December (decem,or 10.)—The tenth month of Roman

year.
