COMPARATIVE STRENGTH OF ALCOHOL.

The standard American alcohol is 188 proof, which

would be under English rule of ascertaining proof 65

per cent, overproof. Germany and France would show

a proof of 94 per cent.

The German proof as compared with our proof

would be 50 per cent.; French the same.

Absolute alcohol would be 200 per cent, for Ameri

can, 75 per cent, overproof for English and 100 per

cent,for Germany and France. Such alcohol is almost

unknown to commerce on account of its volatility.

TABLE OF MEASURES.

The standard gallon of the United States measures

231 cubic inches,and contains 8.839 pounds Avoridupois

distilled water at its maximum density 39.83 deg. Fah

renheit, and 30 inches Barometer height.

The standard bushel measures 2,150.42 cubicinches,

equal to 77.627 pounds Avoirdupois distilled water at

same temperature and barometer; its dimensions are

18J inches inside diameter, 19J inches outside,and 8

inches deep. When heaped the cone must not be less

than 6 inches high.
