nisberg, which yields the king of wines,is said to have
been planted about1009 underthe direction of Ruthard,
archbishop of Mainz. During the Thirty Years war
those vineyards were destroyed,hut in 1722 the abbot
of Dulda built a chateau on the cite of the old convent
and re-planted the vineyards. Hochheimer comes from
a small district on the hanks of the Main several miles
above its junction with the Rhine.
The wines of Moselle, many of which are shipped
as sparkling wines, occupy only a secondary position
although in favorable seasons they are characterized by
a pleasant flavor, much resembling those of the Rhine,
with a marked aroma, hut they are light and acid.
The Grunherg wines of northern Germany are very
acid.

in the cultivation of many varieties of the vine, and
