wines the Barolo of Piedmont,the Chianti of Tuscany,-
the Orvieto of the Poman States, the Lacryma Christi,
of ll'aples, and other special growths have high reputa
tions.
The principal Italian wine is grown in the neigh
borhood of Marsala,Sicily, where the business is carried
on in a more systematic and energetic manner. It
much resembles Madeira wine,having good bouquetand
improving with age, and is made of a combination of
various kinds of grapesincluding the Madeira varieties.
The wine industry of Portugal is very old, but it is
only since late in 1600 that a great foreign trade sprang
up through Oporto. The famous wines known as Port
are produced in the northeast of Portugal in the district
of Alto Douro,embracing a rugged mountainous tract
as large as Rhode Island. The climate is very cold in
winter and excessively warm in summer. To the rich
soil and the intense heat which sometimes reaches 108
degress in the shade,is attributed the perfection of color,
ripeness and body which these wines attain. Much
wine is also produced in the neighborhood of Lisbon
and other districts of Portugal, of which the leading
ones are Torres Vedres, Collares, Carcavellos, and
