HSS video series
Atlas Tube, a division of JMC Steel
Group, has launched the second part
of its on-going educational video series
on steel hollow structural sections
(HSS), “Designing with HSS”. This new
instalment will feature videos covering
topics about HSS connections.
The new Designing with HSS series
starts with a video called Intro to HSS
Connections, which discusses the
various types of connections and the
challenges involved when designing
with hollow structural sections. Atlas
Tube senior sales engineer Brad Fletcher
speaks on HSS connections and other
technical topics regarding steel HSS.
“This series provides us an opportunity
to really dive into designing with HSS,
addressing HSS connection design
specifically,” said Mr Fletcher. “The first
video series educated engineers and
fabricators on HSS design, and now
the second series will tackle the more
technical side of HSS connections.”
Atlas Tube’s mission is to directly serve
the structural design community with
relevant and useful information on
implementing steel HSS in structural
elements. Key themes in the new
videos include: the local strength of
HSS members is an integral part of HSS
connection design; proper member
selection by the EOR will have an
effect on HSS connection design; and
reinforcing of connections is difficult,
expensive and usually not an option
due to architectural or fabrication
restraints.

Vacuum insulated tubing
TMK, a manufacturer of tubular
products for the oil and gas industry,
has shipped the first pilot batch of
vacuum insulated tubing (VIT) made
of 13CrS steel (super-chrome steel)
for Gazprom’s Bovanenkovo oil and
gas condensate field on the Yamal
peninsula. The quantity is about 500
running metres. Super-chrome steel
VIT is highly resistant to aggressive
environments.
“When used in northern fields
development, VIT contributes to greater
energy efficiency and safety while
reducing environmental impact and
increasing wells’ life,” said Alexander
Shiryaev, the company’s CEO. “The
development and production of the new
tubing is a good example of replacing
imported products with those made
domestically: previously, Russia had all
these pipes supplied fromabroad. Today,
TMK is the only Russian company that
has the technology in place to produce
super-chrome steel VIT.”
TMKoperates around30production sites
in the USA, Russia, Canada, Romania,
Oman, UAE and Kazakhstan, and two
R&D centres in Russia and the USA. In
2012, the company’s pipe shipments
totalled 4.22 million tonnes. The largest
share of its sales belongs to high margin
oil country tubular goods, shipped to
customers in over 80 countries. TMK
delivers its products along with an
extensive package of services in heat
treating, protective coating, premium
connections threading, warehousing
and pipe repairing.
