A

legendary tiff between

Sams Bellwood’s dad and

uncle lasted three years, when

Uncle used thumbtacks to wall-

mount the headshots included

in Dad’s original, numbered

pressing of The Beatles’

The

White Album

. Like his father,

Sams takes vinyl seriously –

particularly his most prized EP,

a pink edition of Pink

Floyd’s

The Dark Side

Of The Moon

from the

band’s Australian tour.

“Oh, I’ve threatened

a lot of people,” Sams

says. “I’ve had friends

over who’ve pulled it out

and said ‘What would

do you if I snapped it in

half?’ I’m like, ‘I literally

will kill you.’”

Sams keeps the

rare LP in amongst his

extensive collection –

which includes one of

only 1000 pressings

of John Butler Trio’s

Sunrise Over Sea

soundtrack to

Whiplash

(his favourite film), and

an original pressing of

Sams started his collection

when he was 12, with U2’s

How

To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb

,

and says listening to vinyl has

influenced how he listens to

music in general. “I listen to

whole albums, entirely,” he says.

“I just really like the idea of

listening from track one to track

12. A lot of albums like

The Wall

,

and

Dark Side Of The Moon

, you

kind of

need

to listen to

the whole album all the

way through.”

It’s also influenced the

upcoming debut EP of

Sams' band, Drydock;

he’s planning on a split

EP which will eventually

become a concept

album. The four-piece

come from a mix of

musical backgrounds

including classic rock,

alt, grunge, pop-punk,

hardcore and black metal,

but things get unified

when they turn on their

amps. “We don’t match,

but we all connect when

we’re playing together,”

says Sams. “It’s weird.”

does one do that? “Standing

up, the way you would do with

books – not lying down,” he

says. “If you have them lying

down they’re more likely to
