When a ruthless government
agent decides that the worst
criminals are the best line
of defence against a meta-
human menace known as the
Enchantress, the Suicide Squad
is assembled. Chief among
them are bad girl Harley Quinn
(Margot Robbie), mercenary
assassin Deadshot (Will
Smith), pyrokinetic El Diablo
(Jay Hernandez), reptilian cave
dweller Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and
bogan Aussie thief Boomerang (Jai Courtney). A candy-
coloured mash-up of gritty urban action, comic book
aesthetics, lurid production design and a streak of
insanity that matches its characters, the overall effect
is Fight Club meets The Avengers. Harley Quinn is the
movie’s pin-up girl, but it’s actually Will Smith (in one
of his least grating performances in years) who steals
the film. And Jared Leto’s Joker, who was criminally
underused in the theatrical version, gets a bit more
screen time on the Blu-ray in an Extended Cut that
adds 13 minutes of unseen footage. SH (See page 30)

aviation-themed role sees him
guiding a disabled US Airways jet
into New York’s Hudson River as
real-life Captain Chesley ‘Sully’
Sullenberger. The story made
headlines in 2009, when Sully
successfully achieved a “water
landing” (not a crash) after a bird strike destroyed both
engines of the plane at low altitude, making a landing
at nearby LaGuardia Airport impossible. The 155 people
onboard emerged unscathed and Sully was declared a
hero. That’s what we saw on the news but there was
more to the story, and director Clint Eastwood’s film
delves into the investigation that followed the incident,
where Sully’s actions are called into question. As the
humble hero who insists he was simply doing his
job, Hanks is perfectly cast, and Eastwood presents
a straightforward version of the story that’s solely
concerned with the facts. Moreover, Sully celebrates
its eponymous hero and the “Miracle on the Hudson”
without the descent into sentiment that tends to clog
inspiring true stories. SH

Chesley Sullenberger at his Bay
Area home during pre-production.
Sullenberger later said he was
impressed by how well the actor
portrayed him.
The biplane that Sully is training
on in the flashback scene is a
very rare Stearman Cloudboy, one
of just six still flying at the time
the movie was made.
