Those who gripe that there’s
no need to remake The
Magnificent Seven should
remember that John Sturges’
1960 Western classic was
itself a reimagination of Akira
Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.
This time around, instead of a
Mexican peasant village it’s the
community of Rose Creek that
needs protection from dastardly
industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard),
who wants to strip mine the town and exploit the
residents as a workforce. After her husband is gunned
down in the street, local girl Emma Cullen (Haley
Bennett) enlists bounty hunter Sam Chisolm (Denzel
Washington) and six gunslingers (Ethan Hawke, Chris
Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung Hun-Lee, Martin
Sensmeier, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) to oust Bogue and
his goons. Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day)
wisely avoids a hip and cool makeover – this is a very
traditional Western, with lashings of Leone and Ford
and an explosive climax that’s pure Peckinpah. It’s
also a reminder that this often neglected genre is still
loaded with grand entertainment value. SH

shouldn’t they? From conscience

eschewing classical music for

head-banging, The Secret Life of
Pets does for our cats, dogs, birds
and such what Toy Story did for cowboy dolls, plastic
space rangers and rubber dinosaurs. RARRRR! The
star is a terrier named Max, who shares a Manhattan
apartment with his human, Katie. One day she has
a surprise for the little guy – a BIG guy named Duke,
who’s to be Max’s adopted bro. Uh-oh! Max isn’t
impressed at this hairy behemoth stealing Katie’s
affection, but when bigger things go down they have
to collaborate. There’s a bunny named Snowball, you
see, who’s the leader of ‘The Flushed Pets’. He and
his crew are pretty peeved at being rejected, and are
plotting revenge on humans. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry,
you’ll crave sausages! The Secret Life of Pets, from
the Despicable Me peeps, is fab fun for all the family –
yes, even your animal companions. Probably. AF

Antoine Fuqua became friends
while making Southpaw. According
to Fuqua, Horner’s team visited
him on the film’s set in Baton
Rouge, one month after Horner’s
accidental death, to deliver the
completed score. Horner had been
so inspired after reading the script
that he composed the entire score
during pre-production.
