THIS MONTH at

H

aving begun at JB

Liverpool (NSW) 10 years

ago and now holding the

Movies and Music Manager

position at JB Launceston

(TAS), Greg Ford has watched

the rise and rise of vinyl with

a close eye. He describes

his own collection as “a

bit weird and all over the

place” – but that’s the beauty

of music buffs. “I love the

Peanuts

animated movies,”

he says. “Vince Guaraldi,

a jazz piano player, did the

soundtracks. So I’ve got a

couple of his, like the

Charlie

Brown Christmas

special.”

When he needs some rock

don’t sound that good, but you

can hang them on the wall!”

One recent release Greg’s

keeping off the wall is Sting’s

57th & 9th

, with which he was

happily surprised. “I’ve liked

Sting since I was a kid, since

The Police,” he says. “I enjoyed

those last 10 years where he

was exploring a few different

things, but it’s nice to hear

him doing a full-on rock album

again. He’s just got an amazing

voice." Other recent releases

Greg's enjoying are Harts'

Smoke Fire Hope Desire

, Alex

Lahey's

B-Grade University

and Epica's

The Holographic

Principle

.

When it comes to live music,

Launceston can get a little

swindled; only some bands will

go to Hobart, and still fewer

of those will make the effort

to head north to the smaller

city. “We did get Foo Fighters

in March last year, which was

amazing.There’s a festival

coming up called Party In The

Paddock, so there’ll be Sticky

Fingers, The Smith Street Band,

Montaigne, and Luca Brasi,

who are from Tassie. Luca Brasi

and The Wolfe Brothers love

playing anywhere in Tassie,

because everyone comes out:

‘They’re ours! They’re

ours!’”

in his ears Greg spins the

25th anniversary edition of

The Pixies’

Doolittle

. “It’s

awesome – it gave you the

Peel Sessions, a whole bunch

of B-sides, a whole bunch of

demos from that time, as well

as some live stuff. A great

package!” He also likes his

heavy metal, and explained to

RR the picture disc tradition.

“They’d do it as a limited

edition thing in the '80s –

print the album cover onto

the vinyl,” he says. “Bands

like Iron Maiden and Poison –

they’d do a run of 300 or 500

for the collectors. Now it’s

kind of kicked in again. They
