of improvements made between 2000 and 2015.
UPM tops Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index
n
For the fifth time in a row, UPM
has received the top ranking as the
forest and paper industry leader in the
Dow Jones Sustainability Europe In-
dex (DJSI) for 2016-2017. The DJSI
follows a best-in-class approach, rec-
ognizing companies across all indus-
tries that outperform their peers in
sustainability metrics.
“Being listed as the top company in
the Dow Jones Sustainability Index
in Europe shows that we have been
successful in our actions and engage-
ment and that our results are also not-
ed externally,” says
Pirkko Harrela
,
Executive Vice President, Stakehold-
er Relations.
“We believe that customers, in-
vestors and other stakeholders value
our efforts to manage risks and cre-
ate business opportunities. Innova-
tions such as lighter publication pa-
per grades, renewable diesel and bio
chemicals for applications such as
medical end-uses benefit our stake-
holders and society overall,” she
adds.
UPM has traditionally scored well
in the area of environmental respon-
sibility, but it also received maximum
scores for product stewardship, bio-
diversity, sustainable fibre and pulp
sourcing, sustainable management of
forests as well as environmental re-
porting. Dow Jones also gave UPM
high scores for social responsibility,
stakeholder engagement, social im-
pacts on communities and reporting.
“This is a very valuable benchmark
for our everyday business. Being list-
ed in the index shows that we have
consistently progressed well but we
have to remember that the competi-
tion is getting tougher. Continuous
improvement must continue,” says
Sami Lundgren
, Vice President, En-
vironment & Responsibility of UPM.
The annual Corporate Sustainabil-
ity Assessment is conducted by in-
vestment specialists RobecoSAM
and is based on rigorous analysis of
the economic, environmental and so-
cial performance of the world’s lead-
ing companies.
