Brand-Rex, a supplier of network infra-
structure solutions for enterprise and data
center networks, has launched the new
MT Connect SuperSet solution, described
as an ultra-high-performance, pre-
terminated, modular system based on
mechanical transfer push-on (MTP)
ferrule connector technology.
As part of the company’s FibrePlus
portfolio, MT Connect SuperSet provides
a foundation for ethernet, fiber channel
and infiniband technologies and is said
to future proof the physical network
infrastructure for the emerging 40 and
100 Gigabit ethernet transmission speeds.
It is ideally suited for installation in the
data center where multiple, point-to-point
fiber connections between racks can
be quickly and efficiently installed,
maintained and changed.
The system is based on high bandwidth,
bend insensitive OM3/OM4 multimode
and OS2 performance singlemode
cabling. The set comprises fiber optic
cables and patch cords, ultra-high-
density panels, connectors, assemblies,
faceplates and adaptors.
The system is designed and manufactured
to conform to the ISO/IEC 11801, EN
50173-1 and TIA 568C structured cabling
standards, as well as the IEC 24764, EN
50173-5 and TIA 942 data center cabling
standards.

High-voltage AC subsea cables from
ABB will export power from one of the
UK’s largest offshore wind farms to
the mainland grid.
ABB has won an order from E.ON UK to
supply the power export cables for the
Humber Gateway offshore wind farm.
The company will design and supply 2x14
kilometer circuits of 132kV three-core AC
submarine cable with integrated fiber
optics, to connect Humber Gateway to
the mainland grid. Delivery of the cable
is scheduled for 2013.
When completed, scheduled for 2015,
Humber Gateway will consist of a 73 wind
turbine array that will generate up to
219MW of electricity, enough to power up
to 170,000 homes. The wind farm will be
located 8km off the East Yorkshire coast,
just north of the mouth of the river Humber.
“This subsea cable will provide a reliable
and efficient link between offshore wind
farms and the mainland grid enabling a
clean energy supply,” said Martin Gross,
head of ABB’s grid system business within
the company’s power systems division.
“Offshore wind power, as a fast growing
source of large-scale renewable energy,
is making an increasing contribution
towards lowering the environmental
impact of electricity generation.”

Deutsche Telekom (DT) says it will partner
with regional power provider eins energie
in sachsen to provide fiber to the home
‘FTTH’ services in Chemnitz. This is DT’s first
such partnership, which will see eins
energie construct the infrastructure
and DT operate the network.
Up to 60,000 homes are scheduled to be
connected to the FTTH network by the
end of 2014. First customers in Chemnitz
could be connected as early as this
fall. The network will support download
speeds of up to 200 Mbps, DT asserts.
“By constructing this optical fiber
network we are laying the foundation
for super-high-speed internet access
in many parts of Chemnitz. Being able
to communicate at the speed of light
improves the quality life for the people
of this city and makes it even more
attractive as a place to do business,”
said Reiner Gebhardt, chairman of
the managing board of eins energie
in sachsen GmbH & Co KG.
Roll-out work will begin in April. DT
expects to connect 20,000 homes by
the end of this year. The roll-out is then
to continue with approximately 20,000
additional homes connected in each
of the next two years.

Prysmian Cables and Systems has
manufactured the final kilometer of
onshore cable for the Gwynt y Môr
offshore wind farm. A total of 134km
of high voltage wire, for laying
underground between Pensarn and
St Asaph, has been produced at the
company’s Wrexham plant under
a contract worth £15 million.
RWE npower renewables’ Gwynt y Môr
project director Toby Edmonds said:
“This is an important milestone in the
onshore phase of the construction of
Gwynt y Môr. Reinstatement work is
beginning along the 11km route and
discussions are underway with landowners
to return the land to its previous, mainly
agricultural, use.” He said the onshore
cable route is due to be completed later
this year.
npower said Prysmian already employs
more than 350 people at its North
Wales-based plant, with this contract
providing continuity of employment
for the mainly local workforce.
The installation of the onshore cable
and the associated works has also
helped secure work for a further 90 staff
and contractors to date.
