hinder resident’s ability to evacuate.
Some examples to look for are an
area that has flooded in the past, as
well as any ongoing construction. For
high-rises and condo buildings, make
sure you have an evacuation plan in
place. Consider a generator for build-
ings with common heat or even for a
clubhouse, which can be used as a
place of shelter if necessary.
Familiarize yourself with munici-
pal police, fire, EMS departments
who should be familiar with your
community and provide feedback
for a natural disaster plan as well.
These departments should have your
contact information on file, be pro-
vided with your evacuation plan as
well as any special needs residents.
Many municipalities use a reverse
911 service like Nixle to notify resi-
dents of important matters via text or
email. Make sure to sign up for this
service and suggest your residents
do as well.
Lastly, I can’t stress how import-
ant communicating with residents is.
Communicate regularly, before disas-
ters, during and after. It is extremely
important to have current contact
information for your residents as well
to have a means to get that info out.
Some effective options are email
blasts, community websites, and
reverse 911 services.
By spending some time preparing
now, your boards and the owners will
be put at ease when it most matters.
