WINES OF ITALY
Although Italy is regarded as the home of the vine, it
is not generally favoured in this country,and its production
is second to that of France. There are, however, many
fine wines produced, among them being;—
Sassella, Grumello, Inferno
All red wines produced in the ancient Province of
ValteUina, under which name they are sometimes sold.
They are fight, delicate wines which develop well.
Valpolicella (Red), Soave (Wlrite).
Both from Verona.
Barolo (Red), Barolino (Red), Barbara (White), Nebiolo
(Red)
All these wines are from the Piedmont area, where they
grow on the slopes of an extinct volcano, the best of which
is Barolo, a light Burgundy type.
Asti Spumante (Sparkling Asti)
Produced in the Asti district of Piedmont,from the Ast
or Canelli Muscatel grapes. A sweet wine made by the
Champagne method.
Chianti
From Tuscany. Bottled in the rush-covered flask
called"fiasco ". May be red or white, though the red is
better known.
Shippers' names are : Antinori, Casa Vinicola Barone
Ricasoli (marketed under a name called Brofio), Ruffino.
The word"Stravecchio"on the bottle means"Extra
Old ".
