Sector Outlook

If you’re thinking about working in hair and beauty you’re in good

company as the industry employs around 245,795 people, representing

0.87% of the total employment in the United Kingdom. Most towns

have a number of hairdressers with high street employers like Toni and

Guy being located in larger cities. The sector is forecasted to grow

at a steady rate with the largest number of new jobs being created in

personal service occupations and managerial posts. However, most

of these positions will be offered on a par t-time basis.

Low wages are likely to remain an issue when trying to attract new

people and most employers retain between one and ten employees.

That being so, you’ll find that most job oppor tunities will be found in

hair salons since people will still have frequent haircuts regardless

of economic conditions. The spa industry is also likely to offer

oppor tunities given a continued interest in health, fitness and beauty.

Keep an eye on future trends as more job oppor tunities will become

available in non-traditional settings such as medical and dental

practices and in supermarkets. Tesco, for example, has recently

opened a trial salon at one of its stores and is looking to open 70

beauty stores across the country. Recent trends also suggest that

there will be an increased demand for sales staff, male grooming

specialists and cosmetic scientists.

Alternatively, if you have the right level of experience, you could

consider self-employment, which remains a preferred option for most

skilled professionals in the industry.
